To begin with complete clarity, I want to set the record straight. When Unreal announced their latest release, I initially likened them to peanut butter M&M’s. That’s because Unreal describes them as a nod to “the nostalgic peanut butter candy you grew up loving.” In my mind, that label pointed to the classic M&M’s version of the poppable peanut butter candy, a treat that’s been around since my childhood.
As it happens, Reese’s Pieces have also been a constant presence in my life. While both candies debuted before I entered this world (*cough* 1994 *cough*), Reese’s Pieces actually came into existence about twelve years earlier than M&M’s. My apologies to my mom for not asking sooner about the Reese’s Pieces introduction. Now that we’ve cleared that up, we can proceed to the main event. We previously shared the news about Unreal’s new Peanut Butter Drops, but now it’s time to discover how they truly taste.
Our Verdict
Pros: These bite-sized treats are genuinely delicious! They bear a striking resemblance to Reese’s Pieces, so Unreal clearly nailed the initial flavor. But they bring something Reese’s peanut butter can’t deliver—it arrives with a pronounced, bold punch. I love Reese’s peanut butter, yet it tends to play a supporting role to the chocolate in a candy. This peanut butter, however, makes its presence felt loudly, proudly, and it sticks around.
The peanut butter texture is incredibly smooth. Unreal then mirrored that smoothness in the candy shell. It’s softer than what you’d find in M&M’s or Reese’s Pieces, which helps create an effortlessly enjoyable eating experience. These would be perfect for a cinema snack in even the quietest of theaters because your bites are practically silent.
Unreal designed their Peanut Butter Drops to stay creamy from start to finish. This yields a truly gratifying experience that can lead to a bit of overindulgence. I even had to stash the entire bag away so I could finish writing this review. Admittedly, that’s a nitpick in an otherwise flawless product, but since the flavor and texture are so close to perfection, it’s a point worth noting.
