Whataburger’s Peaches & Cream Shake Shines Brighter Than Sunshine

Operating from the Midwest, there are still a handful of fast-food networks I can’t sample without catching a flight or planning a lengthy road trip: In-N-Out, Jack In The Box, and others. (That said, I’m not far from one of the remaining six Rax Roast Beef locations, should they ever regain relevance.) Although I generally have access to nearly every major chain, the few exceptions stand out all the more when they appear on the radar.

Nowhere is this disconnect more heartbreaking for me than not having a Whataburger within easy reach. This 24/7 burger joint rooted in Texas has spread far and wide across the country—almost to every edge where burgers can be sold—but it hasn’t reached Ohio yet. I’ve enjoyed Whataburger on several trips before, and it would be incredibly convenient for the chain to plant roots in Ohio. With that in mind, since I happened to be in North Carolina over the weekend, I treated myself to a stop at the… Orange Reverse-Arches? Whataburger could certainly use a more memorable nickname.

Alongside the premium Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick’n Sandwich I reviewed earlier this week, I also grabbed Whataburger’s newest shake creation: Peaches & Cream. This milkshake arrived alongside a Summer Peach Whatafresher (made with real freeze-dried fruit); both items are currently available while supplies last. Let’s see if this sun-kissed shake can beat the heat.

Whataburger Peaches & Cream Shake Review

New Whataburger Shake!

Pros: I didn’t anticipate a peach flavor that bold and convincing. Even though the menu doesn’t explicitly declare real peaches, the taste is convincing enough to fool me. Peach isn’t a staple shake flavor, yet this one stands out as the most authentic (and, incidentally, the best) I’ve ever tried.

And for the record, Whataburger’s large milkshake clocking in at a hefty 32 ounces is a whole third larger than what most rival chains offer for their large sizes.

Cons: Call me naive, but this doesn’t feel adventurous enough for Whataburger. These are the folks who popularized the Dr Pepper Shake and later rolled out the Dr Pepper Blackberry Shake; am I supposed to be impressed with peaches and cream? (Yes, I know I’m spoiled.)

I keep circling back to the remarkable Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut Shake I tasted at the National Restaurant Association Expo earlier this year; it would be fantastic to see that flavor on Whataburger’s menu soon—especially given how it stole the show at this year’s McDonald’s Worldwide Convention.
