When McDonald’s rolled out four new seasonal beverages for this year’s fall lineup, they kept the fanfare surprisingly low. Yet here we are to try them, especially since this autumn offering veers away from the usual pumpkin-spice obsession and invites a fresher take on seasonal sips.
All four drinks share a caramel-apple flavor profile and run the gamut from refreshing frappés to warm lattes. Our aim wasn’t merely to judge the new flavor on its own merits but also to pinpoint the exact moment of day or mood each option best suits. Here are our impressions.
The Caramel Apple Iced Coffee
This is the kind of drink that you anticipate with optimism but end up disappointed by after a single sip. Personally, I loathe wasting food, so a failed beverage stings more than most mistakes. The artificial apple note collides with the watered-down iced coffee, and the creamer doesn’t do enough to smooth things over. Overall, this is the least appealing choice on the new lineup.
The Caramel Apple Iced Latte
This option mirrors the iced coffee in that the artificial apple essence remains very forward, yet the iced latte base offers a creamier, more approachable foundation. McDonald’s coffee is generally among the better fast-food brews, and the latte version is pleasantly smooth and not overwhelmed by espresso bitterness. The main drawback is still that awkward apple flavor, which mutes the drink’s otherwise solid latte quality.
The Caramel Apple Hot Latte
There’s a clear intent to present a comforting, warm option for chilly mornings, but the execution leaves something to be desired. Without other ingredients to mellow the artificial apple notes, finishing the drink feels less than satisfying. The initial sips are passable, yet there isn’t enough here to justify ordering it again when there are more compelling McDonald’s coffee choices on offer.
The Caramel Apple Frappé
Of the four, this frappé is the only one I’d genuinely recommend if you’re curious about this flavor. The drink’s milkshake-like texture suits the sweetness of caramel and apple, and the toppings—caramel whipped cream with a cinnamon-apple streusel—are irresistibly tasty. It’s the only variant I’d consider ordering again, particularly if I find myself at a McDonald’s drive-thru during the fall. Still, I wouldn’t go out of my way to chase it down repeatedly.
