On the surface, the installation is advertised to take about thirty minutes, with no major work. And, for once, this promise does not seem to have been written on a marketing team’s euphoric night. The installation assistant is clear, progressive, reassuring. You let yourself be guided without ever feeling like you are entering a training manual for heating technicians.
This new generation also makes notable strides in its form. The white housing, much slimmer, abandons the design-object stance of its predecessor in favor of something simpler, more mature, and ultimately easier to integrate into a living space. Netatmo highlights European manufacturing, French R&D, and the use of plastics that are 65% recycled. On a product meant to stay mounted on a wall or perched on a shelf for years, this industrial coherence weighs as much as its aesthetics.
All isn’t flawless, though. The lack of printed documentation is surprising for a product aimed at households that aren’t necessarily tech-savvy. Also, there’s a hint of stinginess that will be hard to defend to customers. The mounting stand is not included. So, if you want to place the thermostat on a piece of furniture or a shelf instead of mounting it on the wall, you’ll need to add 19.99 euros. At that price, it’s pricey for a plastic button.
Also beware of compatibility breaks: the old Netatmo thermostat heads do not work with the Original range. They will need to be replaced by the new Original heads, announced for September. For a home already set up room by room, migrating to this new thermostat is therefore not recommended for now.

Throughout our test from February to mid-August, the temperature read by an independent thermometer stayed close to the setpoint, with no notable deviation. During cold spells or sudden rises in outdoor temperature, the system correctly adjusted its heating cycles, limiting both the overshoot and the time needed to return to the requested temperature. Those moments when you had to grab a thick sweater at home or throw open windows in winter are largely over, or almost.

The Netatmo Original Wireless Thermostat is a good product, and even a very good Netatmo offering. Not because it overdoes things, but precisely because it evolves the essentials: simplified installation, welcome openness to Matter, smart scenarios, broader integration into the connected home, more refined design, and operation without a subscription, which remains a strong argument against an increasing number of pay-for services.
But not everything is yet up to the ambition stated. The Home+Control app requires a learning curve, the screen is too discreet and ends up irritating, the optional stand is billed separately which feels petty, incompatibility with Netatmo’s old thermostat heads and the lack of modulable regulation leave a slightly unfinished taste to this new thermostat.
If you are not yet equipped and your boiler can accept on/off control via a dry contact, this smart thermostat is a highly recommendable option. However, buying it is hard to justify for owners of the old Netatmo heads, since it requires refreshing the entire installation room by room.

In everyday use
Once installed, the Original Wireless Thermostat confirms the impression left at unboxing: it has been designed to simplify life, without necessarily making everything crystal clear at first glance. The Home + Control app is feature-rich, sometimes perhaps a bit too much. The scheduling requires an adjustment period, and that is probably where the experience can be confusing during the first days of use. Once you assimilate the app’s logic, however, everything becomes coherent: you schedule, adjust, monitor temperatures, check heating activity, and refine your habits without major difficulty.
The thermostat is no longer merely a binary command sender to the boiler: it can also participate in a broader logic, interacting with the rest of the smart home. For users already equipped with a Netatmo weather station or other brand products (except the old radiator heads), the overall coherence remains genuinely interesting.
But this minimalist approach has a downside too. The screen shows only what’s necessary and then turns off quickly to save battery. In principle, this makes sense. In practice, it can feel a bit frustrating. A thermostat you must wake up to read the ambient temperature can sometimes feel like a watch that hides the time to preserve its battery life.
Netatmo has wisely added genuinely useful functions, not just decorative options. Eco-Assist, which uses geolocation to alert when the home is empty while heating is still on, is genuinely practical. Arrival and Departure scenarios are well conceived, and the two shortcuts accessible directly from the screen make the device more tangible in daily life. However, during our test on an Honor smartphone, Eco-Assist sometimes behaved capriciously, likely due to the phone’s aggressive background app management.
The Energy tab is particularly comprehensive for monitoring heating behavior. It allows comparing heating times across a month or a year, tracking indoor and outdoor temperature trends, and also shows the duration of manual pauses and the number of times the Away mode was activated.
Two useful pieces of information are however missing. If your boiler also produces domestic hot water, the app does not measure its consumption or running time: its history only covers heating demands sent by the thermostat. Home + Control also does not provide an estimate of running costs, since it does not measure energy actually consumed in kWh. Given the current price of gas and electricity, these functions would have been welcome.
During our test, carried out from February to mid-August, a thermometer placed independently showed temperatures closely matching the thermostat’s settings, with no noticeable deviation. In cold spells or sudden cold snaps, the system properly adjusted its heating cycles, limiting overshoot and the time needed to return to the requested temperature.
