A merger can sometimes transform a simple payments business into a true full-fledged financial player. This is exactly what happened to Equals Money, launched in London in 2005 and since merged with Railsr to greatly broaden its scope. Long recognized for its expertise in international payments, this online bank obtained the authorization from the Financial Conduct Authority, which allowed it to expand its offer: multi-currency accounts, corporate expense management, payment cards and many other financial services designed for companies operating internationally. Twenty years after its creation, what can be said about this evolution? We tested Equals Money in detail to deliver our complete assessment.
No intention of replacing your main online bank, Equals Money aims to put a real-time expense-control tool in the hands of finance executives and to make international payments accessible without stepping into the counters of a traditional bank.
Founded in 2005 under the name FairFX Group PLC and renamed Equals Group in 2019, the company was acquired on 14 April 2025 by Alakazam Holdings BidCo, a consortium bringing together TowerBrook Capital Partners, J.C. Flowers & Co., and Railsr shareholders, for 283 million pounds. Following the operation, the stock left the London AIM market.
Ultimately, we end up with a fintech that combines two decades of currency-exchange experience with an expense-management offering built around prepaid Mastercard cards. On Trustpilot, 550 reviews as of June 2026 give it a rating of 4.6/5.

What is Equals Money?
Overview and history
Registered in England and Wales (No. 05539698) at 3rd Floor, Vintners’ Place, 68 Upper Thames Street, London, Equals PLC operates under two distinct FCA authorizations. The first, under payment services (FCA No. 488396), covers transfers and payments. The second, held by Equals International Limited (FCA No. 900493) under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011, governs Mastercard card issuance.
To be clear: there is no credit, no overdraft facility, and no FSCS deposit protection. This status as a payment institution directly affects how funds are safeguarded, a point developed in the security section.
Who is it for?
Film and TV production, hospitality, ecommerce, manufacturing, accounting firms, associations and charities: Equals Money counts among its clients a wide range of profiles, but with a common need. In each case, the goal is to empower employees to spend within a strict budget, without giving them access to the company’s main bank account.
For freelancers and micro-entrepreneurs, however, interest is more limited. No integrated invoicing, no French IBAN, no native domestic accounting tool. Equals Money is best suited for organizations that already have organized accounting and are seeking a complementary tool rather than a one-stop solution.
Equals Money features
Account and transaction management
Payments in 23 currencies are accessible via SWIFT and SEPA connections, generally executed within 24 business hours. To manage foreign-exchange risk, three tools are available: spot transactions for a direct rate; a forward contract locking in a rate for a future transaction up to 24 months ahead; and stop-loss or limit orders. Note that these forwards only cover payments for goods and services.
A notable mention goes to the mass payments feature, which allows sending up to 10,000 payments simultaneously via an imported file. For a finance department reimbursing expenses to dozens of employees or processing payroll in multiple currencies, it saves enormous time.
Invoicing and accounting tools
No quotes or invoices: Equals Money does not offer this type of tool. On native integrations, only Xero and SAP Concur are listed on the site. For any other accounting software, you must export data manually, which creates a clear gap with competitors like Qonto or Shine that include invoicing in their core interface.
Expense and team management
Physical or virtual Mastercard cards can be used in over 190 countries. For each card, an administrator can set a per-card limit, lock or unlock instantly from the app, approve fund requests and view all transactions in real time.
For employees, expenses are tagged with photographed receipts and categories directly from mobile. Access permissions can be customized by role and responsibility.
On all plans, there are no per-seat charges and no user-limit constraints. This is a rare pricing model in a landscape where many competitors implement per-active-user billing.
Integrations and API
Equals Money pricing
Plans available
Equals Money offers 3 plans to manage payments: Business, Business Plus and Enterprise.
| Plan | Monthly price | Physical cards | Virtual cards | Users |
| Business | 50 €/mois | Up to 20 | Up to 50 | Unlimited |
| Business Plus | 80 €/mois | Up to 50 | Up to 100 | Unlimited |
| Enterprise | On request | 51+ | 100+ | Unlimited |
Note that Equals Money also offers a multicurrency account, fully customizable, featuring tailored integration, the accounts in the company’s name, the ability to send, receive and manage 23 currencies, same-day transfers and next-business-day processing, plus API integrations.
Fees to monitor
Exchange fees for Equals Money on international transactions and transfers vary by operation type:
- Card expenditures: there is no currency conversion fee when spending in one of the 21 currencies supported by Equals Money cards (GBP, EUR, USD, AED, AUD, CAD, CHF, CZK, DKK, HKD, HUF, ILS, JPY, NOK, NZD, PLN, RON, SEK, SGD, TRY, ZAR). For other currencies, a 1.5% fee applies to the transaction.
- International transfers (FX payments): margins are not published publicly; according to Equals Money’s official pricing page, they are “based on volumes.”
In addition to the monthly subscription (from 50 €/mois for the Business plan), ATM withdrawals are charged at €1.50 per operation.
Value for money
At 50 euros per month for the entry-level plan, the monthly rate is higher than some broad-market rivals. In return, the dedicated account manager and unlimited users provide real value for organized teams. The pricing grid, clearly laid out on the site, leaves little room for surprises regarding included fees.
User experience
Mobile app
Web interface
On the dashboard, you can see balances, recent transactions and pending alerts. With a few clicks you gain access to card management and access rights. Transfers can be initiated directly from the interface, with real-time exchange rates displayed. On G2, finance managers praise the dashboard for its simplicity and intuitive ease of use for staff.

Security and reliability
Authorization and regulatory framework
Equals PLC operates under FCA authorization for payment services (no. 488396). For card issuance, Equals International Limited holds an electronic money institution authorization with the same regulator (no. 900493). These authorizations require Equals Money to meet reporting, capital and internal-control obligations set by the UK regulator.
Be aware that in the event of Equals Money’s failure, client funds would not be protected by the FSCS in the traditional sense: the platform is not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
Data and funds protection
Client funds are held on designated bank accounts separate from the company’s own funds, with Citibank UK Limited, Royal Bank of Scotland or Barclays Bank PLC as custodians.
Equals Money notes that no other party can claim rights over these funds. While there is no formal deposit guarantee, this regulatory-segregation mechanism required for payment institutions provides the core protection for customers.
Equals Money customer service
Contact channels
European customers can contact support through several channels:
- email help@equalsmoney.com;
- phone +32 0800 13 526 (toll-free for EU customers);
- through the built-in chat on the platform.
Support hours are Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 18:00, and Friday from 10:00 to 17:00. Weekend support is not available.
Each client is assigned a dedicated account manager, reachable by email or phone for onboarding and ongoing operational support.
Quality and responsiveness
On Trustpilot, customers particularly praise agents who resolve complex issues in a single exchange. Changing a phone number associated with a account, unlocking a blocked card, migrating systems—many anecdotes describe situations that could have dragged on for days, resolved in a few hours.
However, some criticism exists: a September 2025 review notes a 21-day AML check hold with perceived insufficient communication. AML controls (Anti-Money Laundering) are checks banks and financial institutions deploy to prevent illicit money from moving through the financial system.
A few other customers also mentioned unsolicited sales calls.
Customer reviews of Equals Money
What users are saying
4.6/5 from 550 reviews in May 2026, labeled “Excellent” on Trustpilot. On the product pages, there are also 4.5/5 on G2 and 4.4/5 on Trustpilot, reflecting differences in page update timing. On the UK App Store, 3.4/5 from 36 reviews. Like we noted, Equals Money is still proving itself as an app, but it starts from a solid footing according to user feedback.
Recurring sources of satisfaction
By far, the customer service stands out. In dozens of testimonials, the same themes recur: agent responsiveness, patience with users less comfortable with technology, resolution of complex situations in a single call. This is rare in fintech, with several reviewers naming agents by first names, such as Thabiso Molefe, Ethan, and Adam.
Technically, exchange rates and the dashboard’s clarity and ease of monitoring team spending are cited as key strengths after the service itself.
Criticisms and areas for improvement
Overall, three main criticisms recur. First: iOS mobile app bugs—startup loops and unsolicited password resets. Then AML checks—perceived as opaque and poorly communicated. Finally, some users report intrusive outbound sales calls.

Equals Money vs the competition
With Qonto or Revolut Business, there is no direct head-to-head competition: the three address different needs.
French companies seeking a French IBAN, integrated invoicing tools, and a locally adapted accounting ecosystem (Pennylane, Indy, or QuickBooks) will likely turn to Qonto first.
But once the core activity centers on international flows and billing is handled through a third-party tool, Equals Money gains the upper hand.
For freelancers and small teams looking to convert currencies at mid-market rates with minimal fixed fees, Wise Business better fits the need. Equals Money becomes preferable when a company needs multiple payment cards, a high volume of payments, or dedicated human assistance.
Meanwhile, Revolut Business offers more features but operates with a less personalized human-support model. For businesses valuing hands-on support, Revolut leaves a gap that Equals Money can fill.
