Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold Review: AI-Focused Features Not Available in Europe

It has almost become a tradition: at the end of each summer, Google refreshes its Pixel smartphone family. This lineup holds a rather special place in the world of mobile telephony, serving as the “reference platform for Android.”

Each new Pixel generation offers a “pure” version of Google’s OS, free from bloatware and overlays. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold carries the burden of being a kind of benchmark for foldable smartphones, a reference for what Google can offer at its best.

This year, the changes are far from trivial: the new Tensor G6 processor drops one core in flight and lags on benchmarks. The battery shrinks. The steam chamber disappears. The main module’s camera sensor grows noticeably. Taken together, these choices sketch a device very different from its predecessor while its exterior remains visually identical.

The back switches from the matte Gorilla Glass Victus 2 of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to a matte composite with a satin finish, while the outer screen’s protective glass moves to a custom ceramic-ceramic layer. The frame is aerospace-grade aluminum, the hinge a high-strength multi-alloy steel.

The rear camera cluster abandons the matte Gorilla Glass Victus 2 of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold in favor of a matte composite with a satin finish, while the protective glass for the external screen shifts to a home-made ceramic-ceramic layer. The frame is aerospace-grade aluminum, the hinge a high-strength multi-alloy steel.

On retrouve que, with a folded thickness of 10.1 mm, it narrows by 0.7 mm while measuring 5 mm when unfolded. In a device handled with two hands for extended periods, these two details are not trivial. It remains a heavyweight against a standard smartphone and is not easily forgotten at the bottom of a pocket or handbag.

In total, Google claims the device is three times more rugged than the previous generation. The IP68 certification remains. Still, the composite does not quite give the same tactile feel of fresh and dense glass under the fingers. Some may see it as a step back, but we’re not among those who regret it, because we always use a protective case.

The only visible novelty lies in the reworked camera bar and the addition of HiLight. Behind this label lies a system of colored LEDs arranged around the flash that lights up in certain conditions when the device rests on a table. For now, Google has planned two uses.

When a favorite contact calls via phone or WhatsApp, HiLight triggers a pulse in a color previously assigned by the user. The other use concerns Gemini, which glows subtly according to the state (listening, thinking, or replying). Clever and well-executed, but it remains an anecdote for most users.

Special mention for the screen borders—the thinnest ever seen on a Google foldable. The external display gains a tenth of an inch, to 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) diagonal, making it a bit more comfortable to use with one hand, even if its ultra-lengthy aspect ratio still confines it to quick checks.

As you can see, there is nothing revolutionary in the design of this new Fold. It certainly won’t be the thing to convince a Pixel 10 Pro Fold owner to reach for the wallet again. For others, the device is better finished, better protected, and more pleasant to hold open: these three points aren’t on the spec sheet, but they are real nonetheless.

Screens: a discreet bend for two splendid panels

At first glance, no revolution on the screen side. As noted above, the external OLED panel grows from 6.4 to 6.5 inches and displays 1080 by 2342 pixels. It adopts a 19.5:9 format, slightly less stretched than the 20:9 of last year, and its protection is provided by a ceramic-ceramic sheet replacing the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Its refresh rate varies from 1 to 120 Hz (the Pixel 10 Fold didn’t drop below 60 Hz). This should have a beneficial impact on energy consumption.

The folding screen keeps its 8 inches and displays 2076 by 2152 points (20.3 cm). The ultra-thin glass covering it has been thickened to reduce the crease mark.

During our two-week test, the result is convincing: the crease may become more noticeable after months of daily use. Nonetheless, in regular use it is easy to ignore. It only becomes perceptible when the screen is off or viewed at an angle. You’ll notice it if you look closely, but in normal use you forget about it entirely.

Google touts a maximum brightness of 3,600 nits on the two displays, about 20% better than the previous generation. This reads a bit like marketing because it is reachable only on a maximum of 5% of the display area.

If you dive into the technical details, the HDR peak on the entire panel can reach 2,400 nits. Outdoor readability is excellent on both screens, including in bright sunlight, which remains a notable achievement for a foldable format.

As for the rest, both panels display 16 million colors across 24 bits. The contrast exceeds 2,000,000:1 on the external screen, and 1,500,000:1 on the inner screen. The difference is logical, as the folding layer imposes tighter optical constraints. The default color calibration leans a bit toward vivid colors to make images look more flattering; you can adjust by selecting the “Natural” mode in the settings.

Two panels that are flawless, and a crease that fades from view. On that front, Google has nothing to prove. We no longer expect the disappearance of punch holes housing cameras to call it perfection.

Performance: fewer cores on paper, more AI in practice

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is built around Google’s latest SoC, the Tensor G6. Our test unit is supported by 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage, non-expandable. It’s also available in 512 GB and 1 TB configurations, this time accompanied by 16 GB of RAM. The Tensor G6 discards the eight-core architecture of previous models in favor of seven cores. This surprising choice is justified and has a direct impact on performance

Less power on the surface

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold scores 1,193,492 points on the AnTuTu benchmark, which gauges overall device power. That’s roughly 20% less than last year’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which carried 16 GB of RAM while ours has 12.

The device has two front-facing cameras (one per screen). Each houses a 10 MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture (87° field of view). They do the job for video calls and basic selfies, without ever impressing. It’s better to unfold the phone and shoot with the rear cameras, using the external screen as a viewfinder. The image quality then is a world apart.

Google does not reinvent the wheel for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold and leans heavily on what was offered on the previous model. The only size difference is that the main module sensor moves from 1/2″ to 1/1.56″ (+65% surface). The maker even touts a 56% additional light sensitivity, and the field widens from 82° to 85°.

In aggregate, Google claims the device is three times more resistant than the previous generation. The IP68 rating remains. Yet the composite does not deliver the same tactile sensation of coolness and density as glass under the fingertips. Some will view this as a drawback, but we’re not among those who regret it, since we always use a protective case.

The only visible novelty lies in the rear camera strip, slightly redesigned, and the addition of HiLight. Behind this name lies a ring of colored LEDs around the flash that lights up in certain situations when the device rests on a table. So far, Google has planned two uses.

In connected mode, the group of people disappears without a trace: the paving, railing, and storefront are convincingly rebuilt. In airplane mode, the result collapses. A gray patch spreads where the subjects stood, and ghostly silhouettes linger on the esplanade.

The explanation is simple: the Magic Eraser works by default with online AI, i.e., with an enormous generative model. Offline, it falls back to a much lighter onboard model. It excels for small retouches but gives up when the task gets a bit more complex.

Technically, there is nothing scandalous. What is more questionable is the absence of any hint signaling this abrupt gear shift. On a device marketed as the champion of local processing, this nuance deserved to be highlighted…

The battery shrinks while charging stalls

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold carries a 4,806 mAh Li-ion battery, down from 5,015 mAh last year, a 4% reduction in capacity. Google modestly promises “more than 24 hours” of autonomy, whereas it claimed “more than 30 hours” on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Trimming 4% of capacity to gain about 0.7 mm of thickness is one thing; cutting the autonomy promise by the same amount is another that you don’t see every day.

Yet, it works! We didn’t notice any battery life drop compared to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. In normal use—checking emails, web browsing, social media, 90 minutes of video streaming, a few photos, and some video—the battery lasted through a full day easily. If you mainly use the external screen and enable power-saving options, you can approach two days. In “geek” mode, with heavy use of the folding screen, gaming, video streaming, and digital life’s basics, we still lasted from 8:00 to 22:30, i.e., a full day.

I should note that the vapor chamber present on Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL is absent here. In a chassis only 5 mm thick when unfolded, there simply isn’t room to fit one. On a foldable, heat dissipation involves more than just silicon: the ultra-thin glass and the hinge pose technical challenges that are hard to preserve.

Google therefore chooses to sacrifice a portion of power early on to protect the device and the comfort of those who hold it in two hands, while slowing the aging associated with overheating. This may be frustrating on paper, but once in hand the compromise holds up nicely. The TPU, meanwhile, appears to be spared: our AI Benchmark index, measured over a long test, shows no signs of weakness. Google clearly chose what to protect.

All in all, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold shines in short bursts, is prudent over the long run, and is formidable when it comes to on-device AI. It isn’t the horsepower monster you might hope for at that price, but no one pays €1,999 for a 5 mm-thick foldable in order to game for hours on end.

Software: Android 17 bare and AI with variable geometry

As always with Google, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold runs Android 17 without any skin and benefits from seven years of OS updates, security patches, and Pixel Drops. In plain terms, the device will stay up to date in 2033.

The interface itself is not flashy. It retains some quirks Google stubbornly does not fix (the mandatory app drawer, the tedious uninstallation of apps, etc.). This year, all the effort is focused on AI, renamed for the occasion “Gemini Intelligence.” Very well, but it’s actually a bit more complex than that.

What works for us…

Let’s start with what is actually available in France and which we could test on our unit. Circle to Search now appears in the Camera app: point the camera at an object, hold the navigation bar, and query the Web about what you’re looking at.

The instant translation doubles videos and podcasts on the fly in French. Rambler, Google’s new voice typing (Gboard), no longer transcribes word-for-word. It reframes your hesitations into clean text, including punctuation and lists. So far, all is well.

… And what remains blocked

Things get tricky when you seek the most innovative AI functions, absent for one reason or another. Take Proactive Assistance (contextual analysis of what’s on the screen to anticipate needs) for example—so far limited to the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, India, Singapore, and Malaysia. A variant called Magic Cue is offered in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Similarly, Gemini automations in conversations (booking a restaurant or ordering groceries from a chat) are currently limited to the United States. As for real-time transcription of sign language, it requires an English-speaking keyboard (American or Canadian) and recognizes only American Sign Language (ASL). French Sign Language is not on the program.

The first reflex is to blame EU pill-pushers and regulations. The reality is more nuanced. Ireland is an EU country and it has Magic Cue. The Digital Markets Act doesn’t tell the entire story.

What blocks more often is language and deployment timing: Google launches its most sensitive features in English-speaking markets, then refines them, then expands. For non-English speakers, the distinction is theoretical: you pay a high price for features you won’t benefit from for months, at best.

Another puzzling point: what is the neural processor actually for, that famed TPU that cost a core on the Tensor G6? Some AI features do run locally, without an internet connection and without data leaving the device. This includes transcription and summary in the Recorder, computational photography, and much of Gemini Nano.

If you mainly use the external screen with power-saving options enabled, you can reach nearly two days. In geek mode, with heavy folding-screen use, gaming, video streaming, and all the usual digital activities, we still managed from 8:00 to 22:30, i.e., a full day.

The external glass remains certified IP68. The internal design keeps it at a slender 5 mm unfolded thickness and 10.1 mm folded, with a total weight of 239 g. The lack of space prevents a vapor chamber, but Google’s solution is still effective for everyday use.

The night photography results are quite solid. The new main sensor clearly improves image quality. Digital noise stays subtle in dark areas, then increases when you zoom in. Beyond 10x, detail loss becomes more evident. From 20x onward, you’ll need to be very forgiving or enjoy a watercolor-like result to marvel at the shot.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is certified IP68. Yet the quest for a thinner form factor isn’t endless: USB-C has become a standard in smartphones, and it occupies a minimum thickness footprint. A USB-C connector in this exact design would be 2.56 mm tall; add the female port’s metal shell, and you climb to 3.2 mm. Factoring in the chassis and the screen—plus a few tenths of a millimeter on each side—the thickness hovers near 4 mm. As of now, the Honor Magic V6 has reached the 4 mm mark, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, with a 4.1 mm chassis, brushes up against that limit.

Wired charging lags behind

No big news here for wired charging, capped at 30 watts. In our measurements, the phone recovers between 50% and 56% of capacity in 30 minutes, given a suitable fast charger. Wireless charging saves the honor since the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is compatible with Qi 2.2. With the PixelSnap charger, it can reach 25W (compared to 15W for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold). Without one on hand, we can’t provide you with the exact charge time.

Autonomy doesn’t improve versus last year’s model, but it doesn’t drop either. Google opted for a slightly lighter and thinner device rather than keeping the dimensions of the previous model. If they had kept last year’s battery, perhaps a touch more endurance would have been possible; even better would have been a silicon-graphite battery. Honor, by contrast, bills 6,660 mAh inside a Magic V6 that’s even thinner by a millimeter. Some ergonomic choices come at a price.

Photography: the main module is worth a look

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s rear camera array comprises three modules:

  • Main: 48 MP sensor (1/1.56″), f/1.7, 85° field of view, optical and electronic stabilization;
  • Ultra-wide: 10.5 MP sensor (1/3.4″), f/2.2, 127° field of view, autofocus and macro focus;
  • Telephoto: 10.8 MP sensor (1/3.2″), f/3.1, 23° field of view, 5x optical zoom, optical stabilization.

The display’s external uses a new generation of LTPO OLED with a 6.5-inch diagonal; its chemistry supports 3D-LUT tuned color accuracy. The internal display remains at 8 inches with 2076 x 2152 resolution, 120 Hz refresh, and HDR capabilities. The two panels share a 2,076 x 2,152 resolution on the outer and 2,076 x 2152 on the inner, with the outer screen being the more luminous and more frequently used interface.

In our two-week test, the result is convincing: the crease disappears almost entirely in normal use, only more visible when the display is off or viewed at a skewed angle. It remains detectable to the touch if you look for it, but in everyday use you forget about it entirely.

Two faultless panels, and a crease that becomes forgettable. In this area, Google has nothing to prove. What remains is to wait for punch-hole cameras to disappear before speaking of perfection.

Geekbench 6 credits it with 5,757 points in multi-core and 2,617 points in single-core. The first figure falls by about 6% versus the previous generation, but the second rises by about 14%. That single metric matters most in daily use, as it measures responsiveness, app opening, and smooth navigation.

Finally, 3DMark Mobile’s Wild Life Extreme scores 3,398 points, nearly the same as its predecessor (a modest 4% gain). With an average frame rate of about 20 fps, it remains far from the performance of current flagships (Galaxy Z Fold8 posts 5,881 points and 35 fps).

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold earned 864 points. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold clocks 1,622, which is 88% better. Where the CPU fell, the TPU more than doubles the performance, and it’s worth noting that Google underpromised a 50% gain. For once, a manufacturer understates its gains—no complaint here.

A very cautious thermostat

There is, however, a “but.” And this “but,” as with any foldable, is heat dissipation. We subjected the device to a heavy, continuous load.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold starts with nearly 98,700 MIPS and holds this rate for about thirty seconds before throttling. Then, it doesn’t crash all at once… it oscillates! Google allows it to climb four times, each time to a lower peak. After three minutes, it stabilizes at a floor at 50% of nominal power. It won’t move from there for the rest of the test (the variation stays within three points).

Is that problematic? Not really. In a full AnTuTu cycle, the temperature rises by only about 4°C, whereas a traditional flagship can easily heat by an extra 10°C. Google’s throttling is preventive rather than reactive: Google prevents its SoC from overheating rather than firefighting afterward.

If these results seem surprising (it’s rare for a next-gen SoC’s raw performance to decline), they reflect deliberate choices by the manufacturer. Like the G5, the G6 is built on a 3 nm process node. With the transistor density equal between the two models, what did Google do with the space freed by removing a core?

It allocated it to the TPU (Tensor Processing Unit, Google’s neural network processor) to make it far more powerful. According to Google, it offers 50% more processing power than the TPU on G5.

In practice, that’s well received. Multitasking across three windows on the large display, navigation, and switching between apps flow with impeccable smoothness. In short, the AnTuTu-reported performance dip is not felt in daily use, but the local AI features are significantly quicker.

A very cautious thermostat

There is, however, one caveat: heat dissipation. You know how we are: we push devices to their limits during tests. We therefore subjected it to a heavy load.

Google lets it climb four times, each peak lower than the last. After three minutes, it stabilizes at a stable floor at 50% of nominal power. It will not move from there for the rest of the test (variations stay within three points).

Is that problematic? Not really. In a complete AnTuTu cycle, the temperature rises by only about 4°C, while a flagship typically climbs by around 10°C more. Google’s throttling is preventive, not reactive: it prevents the SoC from overheating rather than fighting it later.

In particular, the main camera module’s sensor increases in size by 65%, expanding its light-gathering ability and sensitivity to light, while the field of view widens from 82° to 85°. The sole optical improvement is the main module’s lens; the rest were consistent with prior generations.

The main photographic unit evolves, while the ultra-wide and telephoto modules show no significant changes. This is likely due to sensor sizes and aging sensors that are not easily upgraded across generations; those parts begin to show their limitations in lower light. A bit more improvement here would have been welcome. Still, the overall photo performance remains strong for a foldable at this price point.

With the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Google knew exactly what it wanted. It delivered—and paid the price (in every sense).

Its two displays are superb, bright, and the central crease becomes forgettable in daily use. Its neural processor nearly doubles the predecessor’s, placing on-device AI at a level few competitors reach. Its new main camera module brings the photography suite up to date. It is thinner and lighter than last year without sacrificing a minute of autonomy.

Not everything is rosy, though. Wired charging lags at 30 watts while a rival like Honor’s Magic V6 handles 80W. The SoC throttles beyond the first minute of heavy use, because it lacks a vapor chamber like other Pixel 11 devices. The ultra-wide and telephoto sensors lag behind, unchanged for several generations, and while they aren’t bad, they’re starting to show their age. Even more problematic, the most enticing AI features aren’t available in France. It’s disappointing for a device pitched on that very characteristic.

Should you be tempted? If you already own a Pixel 10 Pro Fold, likely not: keep it for another year or two (after all, it enjoys seven years of updates). If you’re seeking a balanced foldable that’s reliable and well-supported for seven years, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold remains a solid pick at €1,999, albeit with a price increase of €100. But if autonomy, charging, and raw power are top priorities, you might want to consider the Honor Magic V6, which outperforms on those three fronts—and at a much lower price.

Software: Android 17 bare and AI with variable geometry

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold runs Android 17 without any skin and benefits from seven years of OS updates, security fixes, and Pixel Drops. In short, the device will still be current in 2033.

The interface itself isn’t groundbreaking. It retains some sore points Google refuses to fix (the mandatory app drawer, tedious app uninstall, etc.). This year, all the effort goes into AI, renamed for the occasion Gemini Intelligence. Very well, but it’s actually a bit more complex than that.

What works for us…

Let’s start with what’s actually available in France and that we could test on our unit. Circle to Search now appears in the Camera app: point the lens at an object, hold the navigation bar, and query the Web about what you’re looking at

Instant translation doubles video and podcast content on the fly in French. Rambler, Google’s new vocal dictation (Gboard), no longer transcribes word-for-word. It reformulates hesitations into clean text, including punctuation and lists. So far, all is well.

… And what stays blocked

Things get tricky when you search for the most innovative AI features, absent for one reason or another. Proactive Assist (contextual analysis of what’s on screen to anticipate needs) is currently limited to the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, India, Singapore and Malaysia. A variant named Magic Cue is offered in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Additionally, Gemini automations in conversations (booking a restaurant or ordering groceries through a chat) are currently US-only. Real-time transcription for sign language requires an English (US or Canadian) keyboard and recognizes only ASL. French Sign Language isn’t on the program.

A quick reaction is to blame the EU and its regulations. The reality is more nuanced. Ireland is a member of the EU and it has Magic Cue. The Digital Markets Act doesn’t explain everything.

What blocks more often is language and deployment timing: Google pushes its most sensitive features in English-speaking markets first, refines them, then expands. For non-English users, the distinction is theoretical: you pay a high price for features you’ll only get months later, at best.

TPU vs. Magic Eraser: a practical test

Another area of curiosity: what is the neural processor for, that TPU that cost a core on the Tensor G6? Some AI features indeed run locally, offline, and data never leaves the device. This includes transcription and summarization in the Recorder, computational photography, and much of Gemini Nano.

Its operation is simple: the Magic Eraser uses online AI by default, i.e., a massive generative model. When offline, it switches to a much lighter onboard model. It excels at small retouching but fades as tasks become more complex.

Technically, nothing is scandalous. What’s more troubling is the absence of any hint signaling this major shift. For a device marketed as the leading example of local processing, that nuance should have been highlighted…

The battery shrinks while charging stalls

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold uses a 4,806 mAh Li-ion battery, down from 5,015 mAh last year, a 4% decrease in capacity. Google modestly promises “more than 24 hours” of autonomy, compared to “more than 30 hours” for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Reducing 4% of capacity to gain about 0.7 mm of thickness is one thing; cutting the autonomy promise by the same amount is another matter you don’t see every day.

And yet, it works! We didn’t notice any autonomy drop versus the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. In typical use—email checks, web browsing, social networks, 90 minutes of video streaming, a few photos and some video—the battery easily lasts a day. Using only the external screen and enabling energy-saving options, you can approach two days. In “geek” mode, with heavy use of the folding screen, gaming, streaming, and general digital life, we still reached a full day from 8:00 to 22:30.

The camera tests reveal the main camera’s new sensor brings a noticeable improvement in image quality. Noise is well controlled in dark areas, while pushing the zoom beyond 10x reveals more pronounced degradation. Above 20x, you’ll need a fair amount of indulgence or an appreciation for a watercolor effect to be impressed by the result.

The primary module’s lens is the only one that progresses; the larger ultra-wide and telephoto sensors remain unchanged for several generations, hindering performance in low light. The aesthetic and technical ambitions weren’t fully satisfied in this iteration. Still, the device remains a strong all-rounder and shows much to be earned from ongoing refinement.
