Intego Antivirus Premium Review (2026): Is the macOS Antivirus Worth It on Windows PC?

Founded in 1997 in Paris, France, the company is now part of the cybersecurity giant Kape (owner of CyberGhost, ExpressVPN…). Specializing in macOS defense, Intego is best known for its Mac security tools such as VirusBarrier antivirus, NetBarrier firewall, ContentBarrier parental controls, Washing Machine disk cleanup, or the Privacy Protection VPN. In addition to its Mac Premium Bundle X9 featuring VirusBarrier X9 and NetBarrier X9, the publisher develops the Windows antivirus Intego Antivirus Premium. Unlike the major security suites on the market, the Windows version still omits many popular extras such as VPNs, parental controls, privacy protections, etc.—tools that are sometimes found even in free antivirus programs.

Intego Antivirus Premium focuses essentially on protection against malware and privacy defense. The software includes traditional signature-based scanning as well as behavioral analysis to detect and block known and unknown threats such as ransomware, zero-day attacks, banking Trojans, phishing, etc. The publisher recently updated the software with an add-on called Cleaner to scan duplicate files, identify redundant large files, and fix bugs. Nevertheless, the publisher will need to do more to rival market leaders by offering a more feature-rich version, as it does on Mac. There is also a notable absence of mobile apps for Android and iOS.

Protection

Intego Antivirus is not part of AV Test and AV Comparatives Windows test protocols, unlike its Mac counterpart. Consequently, the only independent-lab data available pertains to Virus Bulletin, whose latest test dates from July 2023.

Virus Bulletin conducts three tests. The first, Certification, analyzes detection of 2,248 common threats. Intego Antivirus Premium achieves nearly perfect results with a detection rate of 99.96%.

The second test assesses false positives across 100,000 files, including 29,908 Windows executables and 70,092 other file types. The test yields a single false alert with a false-positive rate of 0.001%. Intego Antivirus is therefore fairly effective on this front.

We subjected the antivirus to a batch of 235 Windows malware samples and a few threats for Linux, Android and Mac, and the detection appears reasonably effective, though the analysis can take some time and may trigger multiple pop-up alerts. The only files remaining after its run are very old worms that likely have no effect on modern Windows versions.

In terms of performance impact, the overall assessment is nuanced. The impact is not significant, but not negligible either. File compression seemed slower by about ten seconds compared to measurements without antivirus. The impact on copying files is negligible, and browsing the web does not appear to be affected.

And for gaming? We would have liked to test more thoroughly, but Forza Horizon 5—our benchmark game—crashes systematically when the antivirus protections are enabled.

Interface and Ergonomics

Intego Antivirus Premium is an antivirus, not a full security suite, so its interface is comparatively lean and clear. While Intego Mac Premium Bundle respects Apple’s design ethos, the Windows version adopts a subdued look more in line with competing software on the platform. The dashboard lets you enable modules and view the number of detected threats, and a sidebar lets you switch to Analysis, Quarantine, and Security Reports.

From the perspective of non-technical users, the guidance is fairly successful: all features are described in plain language, visuals are clear, toggles and buttons are appropriately sized, and their labels are unambiguous. Yet readability can suffer on some displays, as the app does not scale its interface on high‑resolution screens, resulting in a window and text that can appear small.

The settings are well organized and, truthfully, fairly limited. Intego Antivirus Premium is clearly not aimed at users who want a highly configurable engine.

One lingering drawback: the repeated pop-up alerts that seem to loop endlessly. In our threat tests, the interface kept reminding us the next day that malicious files had been detected, even after we had checked the quarantine several times.

Features

As mentioned, Intego Antivirus Premium offers features focused solely on antivirus scanning. Its engine relies on traditional databases as well as a behavioral analysis option that you can enable or disable from the home screen.

The behavioral analysis aims to guard users against sophisticated threats such as ransomware and zero-day exploits. Updates to the engine occur automatically in the background.

A web protection module blocks phishing attempts, fraudulent websites, and malicious downloads. Once again, it’s standard but effective.

These features are primarily available in the Premium version tested here. Nevertheless, Intego offers a free version of its antivirus. It still provides basic real-time protection, blocks potentially unwanted applications, protects against common ransomware, and monitors network drives.

Even though we appreciate the presence of a basic antivirus for those who don’t need more, the package feels somewhat lean. While NetBarrier on Mac is a very good firewall—easy to use and functional—Intego would really benefit from offering a Windows counterpart. Windows software is filled with optimization tools, so Washing Machine lacks a Windows version. However, one might have hoped the publisher would offer its VPN, even in a limited form, or a bundle including both Windows and Mac versions. There is no mention of protection for mobile devices.

Our verdict

Intego Antivirus Premium isn’t a bad option if you’re seeking protection focused on the essentials. It seems reasonably effective, with little impact on Windows performance and ease of use. Its main issue may be its positioning. Why choose it over the basic versions offered by ESET or Bitdefender that sit in the same price range? On Mac, Intego has a very well-made solution tailored to the platform and its particular cybercrime landscape. On Windows, Intego would likely benefit from strengthening its offering and adding more distinguishing points to stand out from a well-established competition.
