Access to locations has also been revised. You now go through “All Locations” to open a dedicated screen that brings together search, server categories, and the full list of locations in a single view. The result looks cleaner than before, with a clearer hierarchy between countries, specialized options, and other network access modes. Navigation becomes clearer, even if it requires one extra step to leave the home screen.

NordVPN still does not offer more visibility into server status. There is no load, ping, or throughput indicator in the list, which prevents quick identification of the most responsive or least loaded locations. The service continues to rely on your trust, highlighting its fastest server and letting its algorithm arbitrate when it comes to automatically choosing the best option.

The sorting of specialized locations fares better. Dedicated tabs let you quickly access dedicated IPs, Mesh Network, Double VPN, or Onion Over VPN, while the country list can be expanded city by city. It isn’t the chatty interface on the market, but it remains clear enough to guide usage without turning server selection into a tedious exercise.

We also appreciate the flexibility of changing location mid-VPN connection. Moving from one country or city to another remains easy, with a seamless switch. NordVPN thus maintains a straightforward approach, prioritizing ease of use over flooding the screen with technical indicators.

Protocols, encryption and Mesh Network

NordVPN continues to base most of its experience on NordLynx, the protocol it uses by default for everyday use and on which its performance promises rest. Derived from WireGuard, it adds a double NAT system designed to limit correlation risks between a user account and an internal IP address without sacrificing speed. It remains this balance between speed, stability, and segmentation that underpins the service’s core technology.

The desktop app now offers more latitude than before in how these settings are approached. In addition to automatic mode, you can manually switch to NordLynx, NordWhisper, or OpenVPN in UDP or TCP. NordVPN also adds post-quantum protection, activatable in general settings when NordLynx is used. This extra layer relies on a key-exchange designed to anticipate, in the long run, risks from quantum computing. It remains limited to certain use cases and is disabled when switching to other, more specific configurations.

NordWhisper occupies a very specific place in the overall offering. The protocol is not there to outpace NordLynx on speed, but to route VPN traffic through the most restrictive networks, where standard protocols are more likely to be detected or blocked. It’s a relevant idea, though it comes with several incompatibilities with a number of advanced service options.

Meshnet, finally, does not select another exit point for the VPN, but directly links several devices within an encrypted network. The aim is to access a remote machine, transfer files, or recreate a local network over the Internet. The dedicated interface has gained clarity, with a clear separation between your devices, external devices, and invitations, plus a quicker read on permissions granted to each terminal. During our tests, the system remained stable, though some file transfers between mobile and PC weren’t as smooth as hoped.

Technical support

NordVPN provides 24/7 support via live chat that responds in French. The assistance is notably responsive and typically replies within about two minutes of a request.

For this review, our speed tests were conducted on a MacBook Air (M1, 2020) connected via fiber with a wired link (advertised download: 1 Gb/s; advertised upload: 700 Mb/s).

To maintain as neutral results as possible, we performed three daily measurements on nPerf (9:00, 13:00, 18:00) over three days, with and without VPN, using NordLynx. For VPN measurements, we used the servers automatically assigned by NordVPN in France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

These measurements feed into our open data file, which aggregates results from the major VPNs tested by the editorial team. They are also included in our VPN speed index to compare services under identical conditions across multiple destinations.

*Note: PING measures, in milliseconds, the time it takes for data packets to travel to and from the Internet. The lower, the better. For download and upload speeds, higher numbers indicate faster connections.

In September 2026, NordVPN nearly reached the maximum speed of our line on the closest servers. In France, NordLynx reached 868.4 Mb/s for download, versus 922 Mb/s without VPN: about 94% of the baseline bandwidth is preserved. The nine readings stay within a tight range, from 841.9 to 889.7 Mb/s, while the ping remains very low at 4.3 ms. Upload, however, drops more noticeably, at 301.8 Mb/s versus 790.3 Mb/s on the baseline connection. For data reception, NordVPN effectively leverages a fast fiber; the upload shows a noticeably weaker performance.

The United Kingdom confirms this ease with 867.3 Mb/s in download and 11.1 ms latency, numbers close to those obtained in France. The link to the United States also holds up well across the distance: 710.6 Mb/s download and 291.1 Mb/s upload, with a ping of 130.3 ms. The American average would have been higher without a mid-test dip to 421.6 Mb/s at the 6 PM reading, while the other eight measurements ranged from 692.8 to 793.1 Mb/s. NordVPN thus maintains high speeds across the Atlantic, with overall solid consistency despite that occasional dip.

Japan naturally shows lower figures, but NordVPN still records 321.4 Mb/s down and 193.5 Mb/s up. Latency reaches 280.2 ms, which will affect online gaming or real-time use more than streaming or file transfers. Download speeds vary from 236.8 to 445.6 Mb/s depending on the time of day, with no comparable collapse to the United States’ occasional dip. NordVPN thus delivers an excellent September performance, driven by strong download speeds in Europe, a robust transatlantic link, and still-solid long-distance performance, with the main weakness being a noticeably lower upload speed.

NordVPN speed and security test

DNS, WebRTC and IPv6 leaks

After several verifications on dnsleaktest.com, browserleaks.com, and IPv6leak.com, we found no DNS, WebRTC, or IPv6 leaks. NordVPN therefore proved reliable on this front, with no anomalies during testing.

Headquarters, privacy policy and audits

Based in Panama, NordVPN implements a no-logs policy that excludes web history, DNS queries, origin IP addresses, and data enabling precise session reconstruction. The provider does retain information necessary for service operation, including email address, login credentials, and certain billing data.

The 2019 incident remains a pivotal moment in the company’s history. NordVPN says it has since strengthened its control over infrastructure, standardized RAM-based servers, and hardened security procedures.

The service also continues to undergo independent audits of its no-logs policy. Deloitte’s sixth independent audit, announced in February 2026, again found that the reviewed systems complied with NordVPN’s public commitments. NordVPN for streaming (Netflix, Disney+, HBO)

During our tests, NordVPN performed perfectly on major streaming services. Content loads quickly, HD playback remains stable—even in 4K—and we did not experience troublesome buffering.

With NordLynx, the service maintains fairly steady speeds capable of handling heavy usage. Access to some catalogs remains subject to platform-specific terms and diffusion rules.

NordVPN for torrenting

To compare P2P performance, we measured the download times of a 6 GB ISO (Ubuntu 24.04) using qBittorrent, with and without a VPN. We let the VPN select the best location and protocol automatically. This method was repeated over three consecutive days, every morning.

To provide a coherent comparative chart, we expressed download times as percentages to reflect the VPN’s impact on the base connection. In this setup, lower numbers indicate better performance.

With very solid download speeds (+31% time compared to the original connection), NordVPN takes second place in this domain and proves it handles torrents very well. Note that since May 2026, the provider allows P2P traffic on all its standard servers. There is thus no longer a need to search for a special server category before starting a download compatible with this use.

NordVPN on iPhone or Android

On mobile, NordVPN now mirrors the desktop client’s organization much more closely. The home page emphasizes connection status, the map, recent locations, and access to all servers, then unfolds several cards dedicated to statistics, Threat Protection, and Mesh Network. The layout remains familiar across devices but feels more structured today.

Location selection has also gained clarity. The search remains immediately accessible, while a dedicated screen groups countries, dedicated IP, and Mesh within a cleaner presentation. NordVPN still doesn’t show many technical server-state indicators, but navigating between location types is smoother on smartphones.

Finally, ancillary modules benefit from this reorganization. Threat protection has a more legible page for activation modes and added protections, while Mesh Network more clearly separates linked devices, file sharing, and permissions management. On mobile, NordVPN continues to rely on OpenVPN and NordLynx, with an automatic mode that chooses the most suitable protocol based on network quality.

Other NordVPN features

NordVPN is no longer limited to tunneling. It retains the expected tools for this type of app, including a kill switch on each platform and split tunneling available on Windows, Android, and Android TV. On the desktop, the application-level kill switch is integrated into the settings and can automatically close certain programs if the VPN connection drops. Under Linux, the approach is slightly different, with a whitelist to exclude specific ports or subnets from the tunnel.

The real evolution now centers on online threat protection. The previous Threat Protection Pro module has been redesigned to better address risks encountered during browsing and downloads. NordVPN blocks malicious sites, phishing attempts, certain ads, trackers, and dangerous files before they run. Potentially dangerous downloads can be quarantined and later restored or removed from protection history. This does not replace a full security suite with local system analysis, but it gives the VPN client a broader role than simple encryption.

NordVPN also adds an anti-scam detector accessible from the web. It lets you submit text, a link, or a dubious file before engaging with a message, page, or attachment. The tool aligns with the service’s overall philosophy: reduce the most common risks without requiring multiple separate apps.

The Dark Web monitoring continues this security aspect with tracking of exposed credentials in data breaches. Depending on the plan chosen, it can monitor email addresses associated with the account, and possibly certain phone numbers, credit card numbers, or national IDs. The goal isn’t to prevent a breach after it happens, but to alert quickly so you can change a password, block a card, or regain control of a compromised account.

Finally, Meshnet remains a distinct feature in the NordVPN ecosystem. It connects several devices in an encrypted private network, enabling remote access to a machine, file transfers, or recreating a local network over the Internet. NordPass for passwords and NordLocker for encrypted storage are included according to the plan. NordVPN is increasingly looking like a consumer security suite, sometimes a little assertive in the interface, but coherent in its intended use.
