Even though Costco is rolling out seasonal items geared toward Christmas and the full slate of December celebrations, we’re still soaking in the tail end of fall offerings from the store. Honestly, we haven’t even moved past Halloween yet, much less Thanksgiving.
With that in mind, during our weekly Costco run we wandered through the bakery section and found that our local location had begun stocking the Pumpkin Streusel Muffins—the treat we’ve been eager to try after waiting for so long. While sightings began in early autumn, the availability of seasonal items at Costco can vary by location. Still, we’re glad to finally share our impressions. Here, then, is our take.
Our Formal Sporked Review
The flavor came through as pleasantly natural, clearly crafted with genuine pumpkin-spice ingredients rather than artificial flavorings. It didn’t come across as artificial or perfumed; it reminded us more of the actual pumpkin pie. Not only does it present the subtle, earthy notes of real pumpkin purée, but the texture is wonderfully tender as well. Pumpkin’s moisture-enhancing quality makes these muffins feel almost creamy.
Cons — Unfortunately, despite their tenderness and moistness, the muffins carry a rather dense heft. It’s not so dense as to be off-putting, but if you’re after something ultra-light and fluffy, this isn’t the right muffin for you.
In addition, we took issue with the streusel topping and the overall presentation. Don’t get us wrong—the topping tastes good. Yet, it’s essentially cinnamon-forward, leaving little room for major missteps. The main problem lies in its texture and how it’s distributed.
Not only does the streusel feel overly mushy, which clashes with the muffin’s dense base, but it’s effectively applied in two to three large clumps on top of each muffin, making the bare muffin look less appealing. Moreover, the uneven distribution means the streusel hardly feels like a cohesive part of the muffin; you only encounter it in a few random bites.
