Tasting Trader Joe’s Largest Chocolate Chip Cookie

Just last week Trader Joe’s expanded its cookie lineup by introducing another version of the chocolate chip option. And you’re probably thinking: this is unnecessary. Their catalog already includes almost every imaginable take on a chocolate chip cookie. Yet while I generally share that sentiment, I’ll add a caveat: they did discover a cookie type that wasn’t in their current range.

Our Official Assessment

Pros — From the very first bite, it became clear this cookie would turn out to be a far better experience than I expected. Admittedly, I usually approach any mass‑produced cookie that aims to be chewy or “gooey” with some skepticism when it isn’t baked fresh on the premises. Still, the flavor here surpassed our anticipations.

It comes across as rich and buttery, with a touch of sweetness balanced by a noticeable saltiness. In addition, it is densely studded with chocolate chips that taste like quality ingredients. The chocolate elements actually help temper the sweetness because not all of the morsels are milk chocolate. There are both semisweet and milk chocolate chips, and there are enough of them to disrupt the cookie dough’s basic flavor nicely.

What stood out most about this cookie overall is its texture. It carries the feel of a cookie just out of the oven. It isn’t stale at all, yet the interior remains tender and moist without turning gummy or overly processed. If we were really after a homemade‑style chocolate chip cookie without baking one ourselves or visiting a bakery, this is exactly what we would reach for. A quick warm-up for a few seconds and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top would be absolutely sensational.

Cons — The minor caveat I’d mention is a slight, tangy aftertaste. I don’t hold it entirely against the cookie, given the challenge of preserving its texture during transport and mass distribution. Still, that tangy note lingers a bit, though it’s much subtler than what you’ll find with many other chewy cookies from the grocery aisle.

The last point we’ll touch on is something a Trader Joe’s employee brought up during checkout. He mentioned that these cookies are excellent, but don’t trust the serving size listed on the back—there’s no way this yields just three portions. And he’s right. It feels odd to advertise something as a single serving while labeling the nutrition facts as three portions. It didn’t sit perfectly with me. I would still buy the cookie again, but the decision to present it as three servings strikes me as an odd choice for Trader Joe’s or the cookie’s supplier.
