Pampelonne French 75 — A Reimagined Take
To be frank, we had anticipated more subtlety from this offering. While it’s a wine-based cocktail, the goal was to evoke a French 75 with hints of juniper, lemon, and elderflower — and it didn’t quite hit that mark. In truth, it largely read as simple wine. It might have carried a hint of sweetness, but beyond that the drink’s anticipated complexity was noticeably absent. It wasn’t off-putting; the wine’s character remained pleasant, yet this particular try left us a bit let down.
Midwestern McIntosh Apples
As autumn approaches, we’ve been snacking on apples nonstop. Yet we can’t rely on Honeycrisps and the extra-large, juicy varieties alone. We crave something with more nuance and a deeper, more layered flavor. That’s precisely what these offer. They’re McIntosh apples, which means a softer, perhaps slightly mushier texture. Still, that’s sometimes exactly what we want. The fruit appeared perfectly in season, plump and juicy. We’ll definitely pick them up again before the season ends, especially given their solid value for money.
Uncured Turkey Corn Dogs
As usual, we take a quick stroll through the frozen foods aisle, feeling a sense of coziness and nostalgia with the current season. That’s how we ended up grabbing these. In the end, they’re among the best frozen corn dogs we’ve ever sampled. Even though the meat is turkey, the overall effect remains familiar, and much of the nostalgia comes from the crust. The sausage itself does taste a bit different, but not in a bad way. The coating becomes delightfully crisp when you bake or air-fry them rather than just microwaving. If you can spare a couple of extra minutes, I highly recommend taking that route.
Villa Italia Blood Orange Italian Soda
Trader Joe’s always keeps us intrigued with its beverage lineup. Some of our favorite drinks are the ones sold in bulk rather than single cans. This Italian soda came in a 1-liter glass bottle, which was charming in its own right, but the contents inside truly impressed us.
We didn’t anticipate such a bright flavor profile. Typically, drinks like this lean toward a mellower note. Yet this one delivered a surprisingly punchy aroma and tang, while remaining sweet and smooth. It’s fortunate this isn’t a seasonal item, because we foresee repeating purchases now that we’ve discovered it.
Hane Style Beef Gyoza
We were genuinely excited to try these since they mark a fresh addition to Trader Joe’s frozen lineup, and given the cult following of their typical pork and chicken gyoza. They’re among our most frequently repurchased items at TJ’s thanks to the ideal blend of quality, affordability, and accessibility. We hoped these would extend that success with a bit more nuance. And they do — with a caveat.
You see, there’s a noticeable learning curve involved. If you don’t adhere to the instructions precisely, things won’t go well. But for those who nail it, they’re delicious and highly satisfying. Not only is the flavor solid, but the contrast between the tender filling and the crunch of the crust is truly pleasing.
