Planet Oat Embraces the Basics — We Had to Try It

In recent years, there has been a notable trend of brands revisiting simpler formulations and returning to basics in their products. This shift doesn’t imply a loss of flavor or the removal of what customers adore; rather, it offers shoppers a chance to read the ingredients and truly know what’s inside their foods.

The movement away from artificial colors and flavors has gained traction, pushing brands toward more natural and healthier offerings. We’ve witnessed this across a wide spectrum of brands. And the newest entrant into the natural arena? Planet Oat.

What Are They Changing?

If you’re worried that your favorite oat milk is about to be altered and disrupt your morning routine, take a moment to relax. The entire line isn’t being overhauled. Planet Oat’s existing milks will stay as they are. However, for those who crave something a touch more transparent or, as Planet Oat phrases it, humbler, there’s a fresh option to explore. Planet Oat has rolled out a new oat milk named Humble Edition. This milk comprises only five ingredients: oats, water, banana puree, sea salt, and baking soda. That’s all there is to it.

A five-ingredient oat milk? Naturally, we had to go out and sample it. Oat milk is one of my go-to dairy alternatives for coffee, and Planet Oat has consistently delivered a smooth, well-balanced version that doesn’t overwhelm or taste off. So, let’s discuss how it tastes.

Planet Oat’s Humble Edition

Pros: I was genuinely impressed by this oat milk. I don’t usually drink oat milk neat, but I tried it straight to gauge its inherent flavor, then prepared my usual coffee with it to evaluate how it performs against regular milk (and, of course, the creamer I adore from Planet Oat). It performed superbly. The oat flavor wasn’t dominant; it came across as smooth and pleasant. In coffee, with a touch of syrup, it held its own beside the creamer.

Cons: Honestly, there isn’t much to criticize. Nevertheless, some may balk at the banana puree. I initially worried about it too—would this turn my morning coffee into banana coffee? The answer is no. The banana note is barely detectable, seemingly adding a hint of natural sweetness without imparting a banana flavor. Those who are particularly sensitive to banana flavor or who want to drink it straight might not love it, but I’d still encourage giving it a try.

Of course, if you dislike oat flavors, this drink might not be for you. It tastes distinctly oat-forward, which I personally enjoyed. But when you pour milk, you expect a familiar taste, and this isn’t designed to replicate classic dairy.

The Verdict

As you might expect, I’m quite fond of Planet Oat’s Humble Edition. If you enjoy oat milk, I’d recommend giving it a try, even if the banana element gives you pause. I assure you won’t notice it, and when you add it to coffee, you certainly won’t detect banana at all.
