At under 60 euros, the equation seems unbeatable. The question remains whether the autonomy keeps up with the momentum.

Installing a surveillance camera is still too often long and tedious. Finding the right spot, drilling, mounting, and wiring: a list of tasks that deters many individuals who still want home surveillance. The Reolink Argus MagiCam totally bucks this logic: a compact body that literally sticks where you need it, thanks to magnetic mounting and the adhesive disc provided for non-metal surfaces. A desk drawer, a shelf, a window, or even a fridge: the MagiCam sits almost anywhere and moves just as easily.

The unit can operate on AA batteries or wired USB-C, with a power cable included if you want to install it near a port or power outlet. I mostly used batteries during most of the test, simply because this is what allows you to fully enjoy the placement freedom promised by the magnetic form factor. A well-thought detail: the app lets you specify the type of batteries used, which refines the displayed autonomy instead of relying on a generic estimate. The rear compartment, also held by a magnetic system, makes battery access easier.

A point to know before diving in: you must install the microSD card before inserting the batteries, or you’ll have to dismantle everything to access it again. In practice, this was minor during my setup, as the built-in tutorial explains the step at the right moment.

The Reolink app makes a very positive impression right from the start. Several video tutorials accompany first boot, covering installation, wall mounting, pairing, and core features. The videos are very approachable and complemented by voice prompts during setup. For this price tier, it’s a level of pedagogy you don’t always expect.

Trouver l’emplacement idéal, percer, fixer, brancher : une liste de tâches qui rebute bon nombre de particuliers qui veulent pourtant assurer la sécurité de leur domicile. La Reolink Argus MagiCam va totalement à contre-courant de cette logique : un boîtier compact qui se colle littéralement là où l’on a besoin, grâce à son système de fixation magnétique et à la pastille adhésive fournie pour les surfaces non métalliques. Un tiroir de bureau, une étagère, une fenêtre ou même sur un réfrigérateur : la MagiCam se pose absolument partout et se déplace tout aussi facilement.

No additional mount is required to place it on a shelf or table; it stands on its own. This originality has a trade-off: it’s somewhat less discreet than some more traditional models that blend into the surroundings.

Where the MagiCam truly shines is installation. The magnetic mounting system truly changes daily life. You stick the camera to a metal surface, or you use the adhesive pad provided for non-metal surfaces, and it’s set up in seconds. No drill, no anchors, no hassle. You can mount it on PVC, a wooden window frame, or any other surface compatible with the adhesive.

J’ai privilégié les piles durant l’essentiel du test, car c’est ce qui permet vraiment de profiter de la liberté de placement promise par le format magnétique. Un détail bien pensé : l’application permet d’indiquer le type de piles utilisées, ce qui affine l’estimation de l’autonomie affichée plutôt que de se baser sur une estimation générique. Le compartiment arrière, aussi maintenu par un système magnétique, facilite l’accès aux piles.
