During a recent visit to Shake Shack’s Innovation Kitchen in NYC—a confessional-worthy stop, I’ll admit—I chatted with the team about what makes their Black & White Shake so exceptional. While mixing vanilla and chocolate shakes is common, Shake Shack folds fudge sauce into vanilla frozen custard to create a richer, half-and-half experience I’ve adored long before I started writing about food.
Pros: The new Reese’s Shake leans into that stellar base “custard blended with sauce” idea and elevates it with Reese’s Peanut Butter. The peanut butter custard core at the heart of this chocolate-shelled shake feels authentically Reese’s, rising above the countless chocolate-peanut-butter imitations from other spots.
The inclusion of ground Reese’s Pieces adds a welcome crunch, reminding you that the Reese’s universe extends well beyond those classic milk-chocolate cups. This milkshake should delight Reese’s fans everywhere… which should be basically everyone—except for my buddy Antonio, who recently outgrew his peanut allergy and deemed peanut butter “meh.” Boo this guy.
Cons: The garnish uses unchopped mini Reese’s Cups (not to be confused with miniature Reese’s Cups—there’s a notable distinction) as a visual nod to the collaboration. It’s a fun touch, but it does bring up a practical issue when you’re ready to finish the drink. Given the care taken to finely chop the Reese’s Pieces so they ride up the straw, the whole cups feel like a step backward.
How long will the Reese’s Shake stay on the Shake Shack menu?
Although the Reese’s Shake first appeared on September 1st, Shake Shack has not issued an official end date for the promotion. However, I’d be surprised if it lingers much beyond Halloween. Each location can only churn out a limited number of these Reese’s Shakes daily due to the need to pre-make and chill the chocolate-shelled cups for that cracking effect; if you want to experience this limited-edition treat, check the app first to confirm it isn’t sold out for the day before you head out.
