Louisiana’s cuisine is something you truly need to taste to grasp. Whether you’ve stepped foot in The Pelican State or not, Cajun and Creole traditions, along with classic Mardi Gras dishes like gumbo and étouffée, are widely recognized. But down by the bayous, particularly in New Orleans, people have a fondness for neon-bright drinks.
Kajun Loaded Tea is rolling out Halloween-themed sips straight from The Big Easy, and they’re as fun and quirky as the city itself. As a former New Orleans resident and certified connoisseur of ultra-bright drinks, I was eager to give these iced tea powders a try—mostly because they fuse Halloween with New Orleans into one spooky product. Each powder sachet parodies a classic horror film, placing a gator into iconic movie posters with a nostalgic 90s VHS vibe. One packet provides enough fruity powder for a 32-ounce beverage, and there’s plenty of sweetness with zero added sugar.
Awake Strawberry
The Nightmare on Elm Street-inspired brew is arguably the creepiest, conjuring up a bloody moment after Freddy Krueger’s nightmare short—plus it’s the most unexpectedly sweet. The strawberry note comes across as artificial, yet it works within this Halloween framework. It evokes memories of the old-school strawberry hard candies with a gooey center, so the nostalgia angle lands well here. That said, adding another fruit layer could have made things even more interesting.
Proton Punch Tea
Just like the previous blend, don’t expect a crisp melon note from this Ghostbusters-inspired infusion. It delivers pure candy-watermelon in a neon slime-green wrapper, perfectly suited to the Halloween vibe. It hints at a non-alcoholic Four Loko mood, as if it could use a New Orleans daiquiri upgrade with a splash of cheap rum. On its own, the flavor’s a touch one-dimensional, even though Kajun Tea nails the classic watermelon candy taste.
Netherworld Nectar
The Beetlejuice-inspired Netherworld Nectar was an excellent sipper on its own, thanks to a candy-sweet and nostalgia-inducing (yet still distinctive) blend of passion fruit, peach, and mango. Yet the tropical vibe was begging for a booze boost to truly steal the show. Without alcohol, the nectar tastes like an elevated, fun beverage that makes you feel like a kid again, all without the extra sugar you’d find in typical kids’ juice—and the sunset-orange hue is utterly hypnotic.
Scream Queen Sip
Michael Meyer’s Scream Queen Sip tea wears many hats. The bold red hue is reminiscent of spooky crimson, nodding to a time when juice was a single color—red—and a single flavor—red. This blend leans into the essence of sour cherry, pineapple, and rainbow candy (whatever that means), yet it essentially yields a potent, classic fruit punch. It would shine as the juice for a retro-style Halloween party punch bowl. And with Everclear added, it could become a decadent adults-only party drink dispensed from a five-gallon container into Solo cups.
