After a lengthy buildup, the moment everyone has been waiting for is finally here: the debut of Starbucks’ Black Cat Frappuccino. This fresh offering has generated considerable buzz ahead of its release, and now we can venture out to sample it for ourselves.
Not only is it irresistibly cute and perfectly aligned with the Halloween mood, but last week the brand announced Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch as the face (or spokes-cat, if you will) for the launch. With the Halloween vibe already dominating the drink’s presentation, there was really only one step left when it officially landed on shelves. Naturally, we woke up early to try one of these novelty Frappuccinos alongside the new cookie that comes with the launch, and here’s the full scoop.
Initial Impressions of the Black Cat Frappuccino
The drink aims for a nearly obsidian hue and is built on a Creme Frappuccino base infused with deep cocoa tones to achieve a brownie-like profile. While autumn staples like apple and pumpkin dominate seasonal flavor discussions, Halloween flavors aren’t fixed, though one thing is certain: chocolate remains a constant for the holiday. For us, this flavor feels perfectly suited. The beverage itself tasted quite good—on the sweeter side, which is typical for brownie-inspired creations and for Starbucks Frappuccinos in general. Beyond the sweetness, the cocoa contributed a rich, multi-layered flavor that kept things well balanced.
The whipped cream topping, as is common with many Starbucks Frappuccinos, plays a secondary role, but it enables that delightful black-cat ear garnish to shine. The ears poke up from the whipped cream with a striking contrast in color, which makes the treat feel on-theme and charming. The ears themselves are crafted from solid dark chocolate and offer a pleasant bite.
I see this as a standout addition to the Starbucks lineup because it clearly marks Halloween as a celebration rather than a mere pumpkin-spice afterthought, giving fans a themed option beyond the usual pumpkin-flavored items or the classic mummy-shaped cake pop. Perhaps the most commendable aspect is that Starbucks didn’t linger on the menu; it was rolled out in the week leading up to Halloween, ensuring excitement remains fresh and prevents the novelty from wearing off. The limited-time nature adds to the festive vibe and makes it feel exclusive.
The Black Night Cookie
Apart from the Frappuccino, the Halloween spirit extends to the treats as well. Since candy and desserts are a big part of the celebration, it seems fitting that a themed cookie would join the lineup alongside the drink. And the cookie itself was fairly solid—one of the better cookies Starbucks has produced in recent memory. It wasn’t burdened by that heavy artificial aftertaste that some premade cookies acquire as they sit on shelves for too long.
Its main drawback was a touch of dryness. Otherwise, it struck a nice balance, with a hint of salt and a rich cocoa note from the dough that added some complexity. I couldn’t quite pick up the flavor of the chips inside, so if you were hoping for a noticeable chocolate-chip punch, you might be a touch disappointed. Still, the overall flavor was enjoyable, and we’d be happy to order it again before the holiday season.
